Community, Culture & Place

GoalPlaces where people can spend time together and take part in community life.

How I see community life

Public places should be part of daily life

I care about having places where people can spend time together, take part in cultural life and feel at home in their neighbourhood. More housing also means more people sharing those places. We need to make room for that.

How I would apply that

A clear process for public-space proposals

I like the Chinatown Street Seats. They make that corner more welcoming to me, even when I am only passing through. I also want to understand what allowed the proposal to get approved.

What had to be demonstrated, who needed to be involved, and how was the decision made? I would use that to develop a clear framework for other public-space proposals, so people know what the City needs from them and how to move an idea forward.

Our history lives in these places

Three generations at Plant Bath

My family’s connection to Plant Bath shapes how I think about historical preservation.

  1. My great-grandmother

    A public bath

My great-grandmother used the Plant Bath as a public bathing facility.

  2. My father

    Learning to swim

My father learned to swim there.

  3. Today

    A community place

It now serves the community in ways that go beyond either of those uses.

Preserving history does not have to mean turning a place into a museum. Plant Bath matters to me because its history is still part of community life, even as its uses change. I want us to preserve that cultural connection.
